In 1920 J.R.R Tolkien joined the faculty of the University of Leeds. He then became a college professor at Oxford University. Over the years he worked on the Lord of the Rings which was inspired by European myths. Tolkien's first job was as a lexicographer on the New English Dictionary. He then retired in 1959. After Tolkien wrote the Hobbit the publisher was stunned at how successful it did he asked Tolkien to write a second which lead to him to write all of books he wrote. By the time Tolkien had completed his degree at Oxford WW1 had erupted. Tolkien had enlisted, and he was commissioned at Lancashire Fusilier. He did not see active duty for months and wrote 'Gobin Feet'. In private, Tolkien amused himself by writing an elaborate series of fantasy tales, which were often dark and sorrowful. He created this "legendarium" which eventually became The Silmarillion. This lead to the Lord of the Rings which is an extension of The Silmarillion.
I think the author sees himself as Frodo and Gandalf because Frodo goes on lots of adventures and J.R.R Tolkien went to some places since he was in the war he went to places. But he's also like Gandalf because Tolkien wrote books with some language he made up in it. He was also a completed his degree at Oxford, was a professor at Oxford, and was on the staff of The Oxford English Dictionary. This makes him a little like Gandalf because Gandalf is wise and shares his wisdom with people; also Gandalf has power he can destroy people or things with and Tolkien, when he wanted to amuse himself, wrote dark and sorrowful fantasy tales. So he could have seen himself as Gandalf or Frodo, maybe both, or maybe none at all.
