The main characters in The Fellowship of the Ring are Frodo and the Ring. Frodo was Bilbo's nephew, and when Bilbo left because of how old he was and because of the ring he passed the Ring down to Frodo. Frodo is adventuress, curious, and would do anything for his friends. The ring isn't a person but still is a big part of the book. The plot was that Sauron needed the One Ring which is the ring Frodo had so Frodo went on a journey with his friends to find someone to destroy the One Ring. And if Sauron gets the One Ring he will take over all of middle earth and enslave everyone into the darkness. When Frodo goes on his journeys with his friends he finds other people that go on the journeys with him. So the plot setup would be that Frodo is trying to keep the One Ring away from Sauron, and trying to find a way to destroy it. All while running away from the black riders that are trying to get Frodo and the ring.
A symbol in the story is the ring. It can control the other Rings and bring the other Rings together, but if you use the One Ring for to long and you keep on using its power you become dark and evil and you could do bad things with it. Sauron wants to get all the Rings and bring them together to cast darkness over all the land. The One Ring is a symbol or a theme because if a person has so much power they usually do things that only help themselves and become not the greatest person, and it's a symbol of the people who want power. So it's symbolizing what people do with too much power. A recurring theme in the Fellowship of the ring is good vs. evil because all of the land not taken over by darkness like the hobbits which are 'good' fight Sauron which is essentially evil and win because the good always wins.
